How to Hand-Sew a Scrunchie

Hi! Today, we're making a scrunchie. If you’re new to sewing, a scrunchie is a great place to start. It’s simple and useful. Scrunchies help keep your hair out of your face. There are different sizes like regular, mini, and giant—just cut your fabric to the size you want. If you got a scrunchie kit from SiaDezigns at the fair, you can use that, or just follow these steps with stuff you have at home.

Materials Needed:

- Rectangular fabric (I’m using one that's 5 inches by 18 inches, but you can use any size)

- Needle

- Thread

- Safety pin

- 3/8-inch elastic (cut 9 inches long)

Directions:

1. Use the fabric from your kit or cut a piece of fabric that's 18 inches long and 5 inches wide.

2. Cut your elastic to be 9 inches long.

3. Fold one short edge of the fabric 1/2 inch toward the inside and press it to keep it in place.

4. Thread your needle (matching thread is optional).

5. Fold the fabric lengthwise with the right sides together. Draw a straight line 1/2 inch from the edge (or just sew straight if you’re comfortable).

6. Sew along this line, 1/2 inch from the raw edge, using a backstitch.

7. Attach a safety pin to one end of the fabric tube and use it to turn the fabric right side out.

8. Thread the elastic through the fabric tube using another safety pin.

9. Scrunch the fabric around the elastic as you go.

10. Sew or tie the ends of the elastic together to secure it.

11. Tuck the raw edge of the scrunchie into the folded edge and sew to close it. Make sure you’re sewing through both layers of fabric and not catching anything.

Your scrunchie is ready!
