Dresses online can be deceiving. I can't tell you how many times a client has approached me with a dress that cannot possible be functional. The pictures can make them look like an intricate masterpiece fit for a bride or prom worthy but in reality, they are a simple sheet of material with a few carefully placed pins in the back. This is why it is important to go into a store and try on the dress to make sure it is actually the style and size that you want. You also want to make sure that the the part of the dress that you can't see, the back, side, is what you want. As a tailor/designer, i can tell you, we know how to fake dresses for pictures.
